Snow and ice — Oregon Permit Test

Snow and ice on the Oregon permit test — 3 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

A bridge or shaded area freezes first and may be icy when the rest of the road is free of ice, and the road is likely to be most slippery when the temperature is near freezing rather than below it.

Both facts are counter-intuitive, and both describe the moment a driver has the least reason to expect trouble.

Be aware that the road is likely to be the most slippery when the temperature is near the freezing point rather than below freezing.

On snow and ice, press the accelerator gently to avoid spinning or sliding, press and release the brakes gently because slamming them will skid the vehicle, make turns at a reduced steady speed, and do not use cruise control.

Every input has to be gentle because the grip available is a fraction of normal, and any sudden demand simply uses it all up.

Gently press and release the brakes. If you slam on the brakes, your vehicle will likely skid.

When police or highway officials say driving is very hazardous, stay off the road.

It is the one piece of advice in the section that is not about technique, because in some conditions there is no technique that works.

When police or highway officials say driving is very hazardous, stay off the road.

On the test

When is an Oregon road likely to be most slippery?

When the temperature is near freezing. Both facts are counter-intuitive, and both describe the moment a driver has the least reason to expect trouble. 2026-2027 Oregon Driver Manual, p.78: “Be aware that the road is likely to be the most slippery when the temperature is near the freezing point rather than below freezing.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
