Skidding — Oregon Permit Test

Skidding on the Oregon permit test — 2 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

Skids happen when the tires can no longer grip the road, caused by driving too fast for conditions: stay off the brakes because until the vehicle slows they will not be effective, and steer in the direction you want the vehicle to go.

Braking in a skid keeps the wheels locked and the grip gone, so the first action is the one that feels most like doing nothing.

Stay off the brakes. Until the vehicle slows, your brakes will not be effective.

2026-2027 Oregon Driver Manual, p.79

Steer in the direction you want the vehicle to go, and as soon as it begins to straighten turn the wheel back the other way, continuing to correct left and right until the vehicle is under control — otherwise it may swing round and start a new skid.

The second correction is the one drivers miss, and missing it turns one skid into a worse one in the opposite direction.

As soon as the vehicle begins to straighten out, turn the steering wheel back the other way. If you do not do this, your vehicle may swing around in the other direction and you could start a new skid.

On the test

What should a driver do first when the vehicle begins to skid?

Stay off the brakes until the vehicle slows. Braking in a skid keeps the wheels locked and the grip gone, so the first action is the one that feels most like doing nothing. 2026-2027 Oregon Driver Manual, p.79: “Stay off the brakes. Until the vehicle slows, your brakes will not be effective.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
