Brake failure — Utah Permit Test

Brake failure on the Utah permit test — 6 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

A Utah driver whose brakes stop working while driving should use the parking brake, applying it slowly to avoid locking the rear wheels.

The parking brake works on a separate cable, so it usually survives whatever killed the main brakes.

If your brakes stop working while driving, use the parking brake.

Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.66

A brake warning light tells a driver their brakes are not working, and they should not drive if they see it.

The light comes on before the pedal goes soft. It is the only warning most drivers get.

A brake warning light tells you that your brakes are not working. Do not drive if you see this warning light.

Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.66

A driver should be ready to release the parking brake if the car starts to skid while using it to stop.

A locked rear wheel starts the back end swinging. Letting the brake off for a moment is what straightens it.

Be ready to release the brake if you start to skid.

Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.66

If the parking brake also fails a driver should turn off the engine and look for a safe place to stop well off the roadway.

With nothing left to stop the car, the engine is the last thing under your control. Nobody should drive on without brakes.

If the parking brake fails, turn off the engine and look for a safe place to stop.

To use anti-lock brakes a driver presses the brake pedal as hard as possible and holds the pressure, because they only work while the pedal is held down.

Pumping the pedal switches the system off between presses. Holding it down is what lets the car both brake and steer.

To use ABS, press the brake pedal as hard as possible and apply pressure. ABS only works if you stay on the brake pedal.

Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.67

With anti-lock brakes the pedal may vibrate and a clicking noise may be heard, which is normal, and a driver can still steer.

The vibration is the system working, not failing. Lifting off because of it throws away the braking you just started.

The pedal may vibrate and hear a clicking noise; this is normal, and you can still steer with ABS on.

On the test

What should a Utah driver use when the brakes stop working?

The parking brake. The parking brake works on a separate cable, so it usually survives whatever killed the main brakes. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.66: “If your brakes stop working while driving, use the parking brake.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
