Utah Permit Practice Test — Written Test, 50 Questions

Free 10-question Utah permit practice test, then full 50-question tests like the real exam (40 to pass), each question cited to the Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027.

The exam

The Utah Driver License Division knowledge test is 50 questions, and 40 correct is a pass. Everything on it comes out of Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027. Officially it is the knowledge test; most people call it the written test, or the permit test.

Utah does not state the score that passes its knowledge test directly: 40 of 50 follows from what it does state (the Driver License Division’s own written knowledge test page, dld.utah.gov: “Never licensed is a closed-book 50-question test.” The 40 is 80% of it, the rate the handbook prints on printed p.23).

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

Ask a question about Utah road law

Easier than searching the manual: ask in your own words — how far from a fire hydrant you may park, when you must stop for a school bus — and the answer comes from Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027 or Utah’s code, with the page or the section it is in. When neither says, the answer says so rather than guess. Or tick Nationwide and compare every state on one question.

What Utah tests

159 concepts, 866 separate rules. Each one is a page of its own.

Questions from the Utah test

What must a Utah resident hold before driving on a public road?

A valid Utah license, learner permit, or temporary license. The license is Utah saying it has checked you can drive. Without one, every trip is a ticket waiting to be written. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.4: “Every resident of Utah who drives a motor vehicle on the highways (any public roadway) must have a valid Utah driver license, learner permit, or temporary driver license.”

What do members of the Driver License Compact do with a traffic conviction?

Forward it to the driver’s home state. A ticket picked up two states away follows you home. Driving badly on holiday is not a clean slate. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.5: “Member jurisdictions exchange driver records and forward convictions for traffic offenses to the driver’s home state.”

How many classroom hours does driver education take at a Utah high school?

27 hours. The hours are set so a school cannot shorten the class and still hand out the certificate Utah accepts. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.6: “27 hours of high school classroom instruction, or 18 hours of commercial/private school, or 30 hours of Utah-approved online/home study; and”

Who may sit beside a Utah learner permit holder under 18?

A licensed parent, guardian, or approved instructor. The seat beside you is the whole safety net. Somebody has to be there who can say stop before you learn the hard way. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.6: “The learner permit entitles an applicant that is younger than 18 years old to operate a Class D motor vehicle only if:”

Between which hours may a licensed 16 year old not drive in Utah?

12 am and 5 am. Those five hours are the worst of the week for a new driver. Empty roads, tired eyes, and drivers who have been drinking. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.8: “If you have a driver license (not permit) 12 am - 5 am”

What does a Utah learner permit cost?

$19.00. Knowing the fee before you arrive is the difference between leaving with a permit and leaving to find a bank. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.9: “Learner permit $19.00”

How old must an applicant be for an original Utah Class D license?

At least 16 years of age. Class D is the paper this whole handbook is written for. Everything else on the list is a bigger vehicle. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.10: “To obtain an original regular Class D license, you must be at least 16 years of age.”

What does restriction code B on a Utah license require?

That the driver wears corrective lenses. The code is the whole reason a vision test exists. Driving without the glasses it names is driving unlicensed. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.12: “B - Driver must wear corrective lenses”

Which documents will a Utah license office refuse?

Faxed or photocopied documents. A photocopy proves nothing about the paper it came from. The office checks the document, not a picture of one. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.13: “All documents must be original or certified copies by the issuing agency. Faxed or photocopied documents will NOT be accepted.”

What does Utah accept in place of a driver education completion certificate?

A clear license status from another state. One of the two has to be true. Utah will either teach you itself or accept that another state already did. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.13: “Driver education completion certificate, or have a “clear” license status from another state or country.”

What decides which Utah certificate or card an applicant may obtain?

Their verified lawful status. The state is putting a name on a card that opens doors for eight years. It checks who that name belongs to first. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.14: “An individuals lawful status will determine what type of driving certificate or identification card the applicant is eligible to obtain.”

What may a holder of an out-of-state learner permit do in Utah?

Nothing, because they may not drive here. A permit is supervised practice under another state’s rules. Utah does not extend its roads to those rules. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.18: “Drivers with an out-of-state learner permit may NOT drive in Utah.”

How early may a Utah driver license be renewed?

Up to six months before expiration. Six months of warning means nobody has to drive on an expired card while waiting for an appointment. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.18: “You may renew your driver license up to six months before the expiration of the license.”

How soon must a Utah Class D driver report a change of address?

Within 10 days. The division does not chase you. A suspension notice sent to your old address counts as delivered. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.19: “If you have a change of address, you are required by law to notify the division of the new address within 10 DAYS of moving.”

Who may obtain a Utah identification card?

Only a Utah resident. The card says the state knows who and where you are. It cannot say that about somebody who lives elsewhere. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.19: “Only a Utah resident may obtain a Utah identification card.”

Who is responsible for a Utah driver being in good enough health to drive?

The driver. Nobody checks your health at the roadside. The rule puts the job on the one person who knows how you feel today. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.20: “You are responsible for ensuring you are in reasonably good health when you are driving.”

What visual acuity does Utah require in at least one eye for a Class D license?

20/40. Reading a sign is only half of seeing. The field is what catches the child stepping off the curb beside you. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.21: “The guidelines require you to have 20/40 vision in at least one eye and a visual field of at least 90° to drive a Class D (regular) vehicle.”

What does the Utah handbook say about a driver whose mind is elsewhere?

They are probably not driving safely. Steering is the easy part. What keeps a car out of trouble is attention, and worry quietly spends it. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.21: “If your mind is not on your driving, you are probably not driving safely.”

What does Utah send an applicant whose health may affect their driving?

A Functional Ability Evaluation form. The form is how a condition becomes a decision rather than a rumour. A doctor writes down what you can still do. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.21: “If there is a health condition that may affect your driving, we will send you a Functional Ability Evaluation (FAE) form by mail to take to your HCP.”

What happens to a Utah driver who skips a required review examination?

Their driving privileges are withdrawn. The review is the state asking a question. Refusing to answer it is treated the same as failing. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.22: “Driving privileges are withdrawn if an individual does not complete a required review examination.”

What score passes the Utah written knowledge test?

80% or better. Eight in ten is the bar. Everything in this handbook is written to get you past it and keep you there. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.23: “The written knowledge test is not timed, but it generally takes 30 to 45 minutes to finish, and you must pass with a score of 80% or better.”

What score does the Utah Traffic Safety and Trends exam require?

100 percent. This is a second paper, sat separately, and nothing less than every question right will clear it. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.23: “All first-time applicants (learner permit holder) obtaining a Class D license will be required to pass an additional test and receive 100% score on this test.”

Who provides the vehicle for a Utah driving skills test?

The applicant. The state supplies the examiner, not the car. Turning up in an unregistered one ends the appointment before it starts. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.23: “You will be required to demonstrate your driving ability and provide the vehicle for the driving skills test. The vehicle must be properly registered and comply with vehicle safety laws, including functioning safety belts.”

How many rear view mirrors must a Utah test vehicle have?

Two mirrors. An examiner has to watch you check behind you. With one mirror there is nothing to check. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.25: “Two rear view mirrors (one must be on the outside, to the driver’s left.)”

What ends a Utah driving skills test in automatic failure?

The examiner taking control of the vehicle. The moment somebody else steers, the test has already answered its own question. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.25: “If the examiner has to take control of the vehicle.”

Which test may a Utah third-party tester administer?

The driving skills test. They are examiners the state has checked, not a shortcut. The test they give is the test the division gives. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.25: “Third-party testers are certified and licensed as commercial driver education instructors by the division and can administer the driving skills test.”

Which following rule does the Utah handbook set out?

The two-second rule. Two seconds is the gap that turns somebody else’s mistake into a near miss instead of a crash. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.26: “Follow at a safe distance. Use the two-second rule. Increase your following distance in bad weather or poor visibility.”

How much space should a driver leave between their chest and the steering wheel?

10 inches. An air bag opens into that gap. Sitting closer means the bag reaches you before it has finished inflating. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.27: “You should leave 10 inches between your chest and the steering wheel. Do not lean the seat back.”

How far out should a Utah driver set the outside mirrors?

So the vehicle is barely visible. A mirror full of your own car is a mirror showing you nothing. Turned out, it covers most of the blind spot. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.27: “Adjust outside mirrors to minimize blind spots by setting your mirrors so you can barely see the left and right side of your vehicle, ensuring a wide view of adjacent lanes.”

Who must be restrained in a vehicle in Utah?

Everyone in the vehicle. A belt keeps you behind the wheel where the controls are, and keeps a passenger out of the person in front. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.27: “Always fasten your safety belt. Everyone in your vehicle must have a fastened safety belt or child seat.”

How many citations can a Utah driver receive for unrestrained passengers?

One for each unrestrained passenger. It is not one ticket for the trip. Every person without a belt is a separate charge against the driver. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.28: “If you or anyone in your vehicle isn’t properly restrained, you can be issued a citation for each unrestrained passenger.”

Below what height must a Utah child aged eight or under use a child safety seat?

57 inches. An adult belt across a small child lands on the neck and stomach. The seat lifts them until the belt fits. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.28: “All children aged eight and under must be properly secured in an approved child safety seat unless they are 57 inches tall.”

How fast does an air bag come out of the dashboard?

Up to 200 mph. It is not a pillow. At that speed the bag hits you before you have begun to move toward it. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.29: “To do its important job, an air bag comes out of the dashboard at up to 200 mph—faster than the blink of an eye.”

What should a Utah driver check before starting the engine?

That the vehicle is in park. A car left in gear jumps forward the moment it fires. Checking takes a second and a garage door does not. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.30: “Be sure the vehicle is in “P” (park) or the clutch is engaged if operating a vehicle with manual gears.”

Why should a driver look behind the vehicle before getting in?

Children and small objects cannot be seen. The space right behind a car is invisible from inside it. Walking round the back is the only way to know it is empty. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.30: “Check behind the vehicle before you get in. You cannot see children or small objects from the driver’s seat.”

How long must a Utah driver signal before changing lanes?

At least two seconds. Two seconds is long enough for the driver beside you to read the signal and decide to let you in. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.30: “Signal for at least two seconds in the direction you intend to move.”

Which lane must a Utah driver finish a turn in?

The one matching the lane they started from. Swinging across two lanes puts you where another driver is already going. Finish in your own lane and change later. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.31: “When turning onto a road with multiple lanes, you must finish your turn in the lane that corresponds to the one you started from.”

Who has the right-of-way when a Utah driver merges into traffic?

The vehicles already in that lane. The lane you are joining already belongs to somebody. Merging is asking to be let in, not taking a turn. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.31: “If you are merging into a lane of traffic, you must yield the right-of-way to all vehicles traveling the continuing traffic lane that are close enough to be an immediate threat.”

When should a Utah driver check traffic and mirrors around a turn?

Before, during, and after it. Checking once tells you what was there a moment ago. The road behind you changes while you are looking forward. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.31: “Check traffic and mirrors before, during, and after an intersection, turn, or lane change.”

Where must a Utah driver not stop at a stop sign or signal?

Over the stop line or crosswalk. The paint marks where people walk. A car sitting on it forces them into the lane to get around. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.31: “Do not stop over a marked stop line, pedestrian crosswalk, sidewalk, or other markers when stopping at a stop sign or traffic signal.”

How far from a fire hydrant may a Utah driver not park?

Within 15 feet. A hose has to reach the hydrant from the street. A parked car turns a two minute hookup into a broken window. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.32: “Within 15 feet of a fire hydrant.”

Which way does a Utah driver turn the wheels when parking downhill at a curb?

Toward the curb. If the brake lets go the car rolls into the curb instead of into the road. The tire is the last thing holding it. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.32: “Turn your wheel toward the curb, ensuring your front tire touches the curb to secure the vehicle’s position.”

How far from the curb should a parallel parked Utah vehicle end up?

No more than 12 inches. A foot is the whole allowance. Beyond it the car sticks into the lane and the maneuver has not worked. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.33: “The vehicle should be no more than 12 inches from the curb.”

What does a Utah driver do before entering an angle parking space?

Check traffic and signal their intentions. Signaling in a parking lot tells the driver behind why you are slowing. Without it they read you as lost. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.33: “Identify the space in which you will park and check traffic.”

Which lane is for passing on a Utah multi-lane road?

The left lane. The shoulder has gravel, parked cars and people changing tires. It was never a lane and passing there is unlawful. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.34: “On multi-lane roads, the left lane is for passing slower vehicles. Never pass on the shoulder.”

When may a Utah driver not pass because of the road shape?

When a curve or hill blocks the view. The road you cannot see is the road an oncoming car is already using. There is no way to make that pass safe. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.34: “If a curve or hill blocks your view.”

How long before turning must a Utah driver signal?

Two seconds. Two seconds is what gives the driver behind time to lift off rather than brake hard. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.34: “For two seconds before turning.”

Where does the Utah handbook say a driver’s hands belong?

On the outside of the wheel. Two hands outside the rim means the wheel can be turned fully and fast without your arms crossing or catching. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.35: “Keep both hands on the outside of the steering wheel at all times unless using other controls.”

At which light must a Utah driver make a complete stop?

A steady or flashing red light. A rolling stop looks the same as a stop to the driver doing it, and nothing like one to the driver being hit. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.35: “Steady (non-flashing) red light or at a flashing red light.”

What must a Utah driver do at a school bus with flashing red lights?

Stop before reaching the bus. Those lights mean a child is about to step into the road. Stopping short of the bus is what leaves them a road to step into. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.36: “If a school bus displays alternating flashing red light signals visible from the front or rear. Stop immediately before reaching the bus.”

Where must a Utah driver stop before a turn?

Behind whichever marker comes first. Three markers, and the first one you meet is the one that counts. Rolling past it is stopping in the crossing. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.36: “If you must stop before turning because of traffic, signal, or signs, smoothly come to a complete stop without skidding behind the stop line, crosswalk, or stop sign (whichever comes first.)”

What does a Utah two-point turn use to turn the vehicle around?

An alley or a driveway. Going round the block is safer than any turn across traffic. The two-point turn is what you use when there is no block. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.37: “A street alley or driveway can be used to turn around when you cannot drive around the block.”

When should a Utah driver use a three-point turn?

When the road is too narrow for a U-turn. It leaves the car across both lanes for several seconds. That is only acceptable where there is no other way round. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.38: “Use this only if the road is too narrow for a U-turn. It’s best to go around the block if you can. This should only be used on a two-lane road.”

How far must a Utah driver see in both directions to make a U-turn?

500 feet. A U-turn takes several seconds with the car sideways. Five hundred feet is the warning an oncoming driver needs. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.38: “Never make a U-turn on any curve near the top of a hill where you cannot see or be seen from both directions for 500 feet, where prohibited by an official traffic control device, on a railroad track, railroad grade crossing, or a freeway.”

What does a green arrow above a Utah flex lane mean?

The lane may be used. A flex lane runs one way at breakfast and the other at supper. The signal overhead is the only thing that says which. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.39: “A green arrow means you can use the lane. A red X means you cannot use the lane.”

What following distance does Utah set for freeway driving?

At least two seconds. At seventy miles an hour two seconds is over two hundred feet, which is roughly what it takes to stop. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.39: “You should always maintain at least two seconds following distance behind the vehicle ahead of you. Under adverse conditions, the time needs to be increased.”

How many people must be in a vehicle to use a Utah express lane free?

Two or more. Two people in one car is one car fewer in the other lanes, which is the whole bargain the express lane offers. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.40: “The express lanes may be used as a carpool lane for those vehicles with two or more persons for free.”

What is the acceleration lane on a Utah highway for?

Matching the speed of traffic. Joining slowly forces everybody behind to brake. The acceleration lane exists so you arrive already going their speed. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.40: “When on a multi-lane highway, you should use the acceleration lane to match your speed with other vehicles before pulling onto the roadway.”

How many vehicles does a Utah ramp meter let through on each green?

One vehicle. Letting cars onto the freeway one at a time is what stops a whole ramp joining at once and locking the lane up. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.40: “Ramp meters look almost like traffic signals you see at intersections, except they only have red and green lights that alternate.”

When may a Utah driver use a runaway vehicle ramp?

Only in an emergency stop. The ramp is deep gravel that wrecks a car to save a life. It is there for a truck whose brakes have failed. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.41: “You may NOT use a runaway vehicle ramp unless you are in an emergency requiring the use of the ramp to stop your vehicle.”

What must a Utah driver face to make a U-turn at a single-point urban interchange?

A green arrow. This is the one interchange where a U-turn is designed in. The arrow is what says the crossing traffic is being held. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.41: “It is legal to make a U-turn from the off-ramp at a single-point urban interchange and re-enter the freeway as long as you face a green arrow when you begin the maneuver.”

In which order should a Utah driver look before entering an intersection?

Left, right, then left again. The second look left catches the car that arrived while you were checking right, and that is the one that hits you. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.41: “Look left, right, and then left again before entering the intersection.”

Where does a left turn begin at a Utah continuous flow intersection?

On the left-hand side of the road. The left turn happens before the intersection, on the far side of oncoming traffic. Missing the sign means missing the turn entirely. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.42: “When making a left turn, watch for signs and a signal directing you to turn on the left-hand side of the road.”

What happens to traffic at a Utah diverging diamond interchange?

It crosses to the opposite side. For a few hundred feet you drive on the other side of the road. It feels wrong and it removes every left-turn conflict. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.43: “A particular type of highway interchange is one in which two directions of traffic on the non-freeway road cross to the opposite side of the bridge over or under the freeway.”

What do yellow lane markings on a Utah road separate?

Traffic moving in two directions. Yellow means somebody is coming the other way. That one color is the difference between a pass and a head-on crash. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.43: “YELLOW LANE MARKINGS Two direction roadway”

Which crosswalks must a Utah driver yield at?

Marked and unmarked crosswalks. Every intersection has a crosswalk whether or not it is painted. A pedestrian does not lose the right of way to a missing line. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.44: “You must yield to pedestrians entering or in a crosswalk, even if it is not marked.”

How far before a turn may a Utah driver enter a shared center turn lane?

No more than 500 feet. The lane is shared with drivers coming the other way. Sitting in it for a quarter mile makes it a lane of your own. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.44: “When making a left turn from a shared turn lane, you may not enter the lane more than 500 feet before making the turn unless the last car is more than 500 feet from the intersection.”

What does Utah’s basic speed law require?

A speed that is reasonable and prudent. The posted number assumes a dry road in daylight. On ice at night the legal speed can still be far too fast. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.44: “In Utah, the basic speed law states that you may never drive faster than is reasonable and prudent under the existing conditions.”

Which crossing does Utah law require a driver to slow for?

An intersection or railroad crossing. Both are places where something can come across your path at right angles, which is the collision you cannot steer out of. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.45: “When approaching and crossing an intersection or railroad crossing.”

What does a Utah driver do on approach to a roundabout?

Slow down and yield before entering. Nobody in the circle can stop for you, because the car behind them is already committed. Yielding on entry is the whole design. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.45: “Slow down as you approach the roundabout.”

Which of these counts as a Utah traffic control?

A school crossing guard. A person waving you through is a traffic control exactly like a signal, and outranks the signal behind them. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.45: “Traffic controls include traffic signals, signs, and road markings. They also include directions from law enforcement, highway workers, and school crossing guards.”

Where must a Utah driver wait at a red light?

Behind the stop line or crosswalk. Red is the only signal with no judgment in it. Where you stop matters as much as that you stop. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.46: “RED TRAFFIC LIGHT—you must stop before entering the intersection. You must wait behind the stop line, crosswalk, or intersection until the light turns green.”

Who goes first when two Utah drivers reach a four-way stop together?

The driver on the right. Somebody has to go first, and a rule everybody knows beats four drivers waving at each other. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.50: “The driver on your right at a four-way stop if both of you arrive at the same time.”

What do Utah traffic signs tell a driver about?

Rules, hazards, and road locations. Four jobs in one system. Knowing which job a sign is doing is most of reading it at speed. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.46: “Traffic signs tell you about rules, hazards, and road locations. They also give highway directions and show where road services are.”

What does this sign require of a driver?

A complete stop. It is the one sign with no judgment in it at all. The wheels stop turning, and then you look. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.35: “All stop signs.”

What does this sign warn a driver is ahead?

A stop sign. It is posted where the stop itself comes into view too late, on a curve or over a rise. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.48: “Stop Sign Ahead”

What does this sign warn a driver is ahead?

Workers on or near the road. People are standing in a live lane behind it, and over 80% of work zone casualties are the drivers and passengers. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.49: “Workers Ahead”

What does this sign tell a driver to do?

Slow down, look, and listen. It is posted before the crossing itself so a driver has already slowed by the time the tracks are in sight. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.87: “Advance warning signs are posted before you reach the crossing and tell you to slow down, look, listen, and be prepared to stop at the crossing ahead.”

What does this sign tell a driver?

The way to cities and towns. It is the sign that answers where rather than what. Reading it early is how a driver avoids a late lane change. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.46: “They advise you about intersecting roads and direct you to cities and towns.”

What does the shape of a Utah route number sign indicate?

The type of roadway. One glance at the shield tells you what kind of road you are on before you have read a single digit. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.47: “The shape and color of route number signs indicate the type of roadway: interstate, U.S., state, city, county, or local.”

About what share of fatal traffic crashes involve alcohol or impairing drugs?

About 40%. Two in five deaths on the road involve a driver who had been drinking or taking something. It is the single largest cause. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.51: “Alcohol and other impairing drugs are involved in approximately 40% of all traffic crashes in which someone is killed yearly.”

How do strong emotions raise a Utah driver’s risk?

By interfering with their thinking. An argument replayed at the wheel uses the same attention the road needs, and the road does not wait for it. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.51: “Emotions can increase your risk by interfering with your thinking ability, creating a lack of attention, and interrupting your ability to process information.”

How long is a first Not-a-Drop denial in Utah?

Six months. Any measurable amount means any at all. For a driver under 21 there is no small amount that is still legal. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.52: “Not-a-Drop Act provides that a person under 21 years of age driving with any measurable amount of alcohol in their body will have all driving privileges denied for six months for a first offense.”
