License types — Utah Permit Test
License types on the Utah permit test — 7 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
A Utah Class D license is the ordinary car license, and an original one requires the applicant to be at least 16 years of age.
Class D is the paper this whole handbook is written for. Everything else on the list is a bigger vehicle.
To obtain an original regular Class D license, you must be at least 16 years of age.
A Utah Class D license allows the holder to drive personal vehicles up to 26,000 pounds.
The weight is the whole distinction. Past it a vehicle stops like a truck, and Utah wants a truck license behind the wheel.
This driver license allows you to drive all personal vehicles (up to 26,000 pounds.)
An applicant younger than 19 must have completed an approved driver education course or hold proof of a license from another state or country.
Under 19, Utah wants the course or somebody else’s license on file. It will not take your word that you can drive.
If you are younger than 19, you must have completed an approved driver education course or have proof of a license from another state or country.
An applicant younger than 21 is issued a provisional Class D license so that a separate point system applies to them.
A younger driver gets less room for error on the record. The provisional card is how the state keeps that score apart.
Applicants younger than the age of 21 are issued a provisional Class D regular driver license for the purpose of using a separate point system.
A Utah driving privilege card may be used for driving only, and is not valid identification or age verification.
The card gets somebody lawfully behind the wheel and nothing more. It is not the document to show at a bar or an airport.
The DPC may be used for driving purposes only; it is not valid identification or age verification.
A Utah driving privilege card expires each year on the holder’s birthday.
One year, every year. A card that lapses on your own birthday is easy to forget and easy to be stopped for.
The DPC expires each year on the applicant’s birthday.
A Utah limited-term driver license is issued to a non-U.S. citizen whose lawful status has been verified and who qualifies for a REAL ID certificate.
The card follows the paperwork. When lawful status is verified but temporary, the license is temporary too.
A limited-term driver license is issued to a non-U.S. Citizen in the United States with a lawful status that has been verified and qualifies for a REAL ID certificate.
On the test
How old must an applicant be for an original Utah Class D license?
At least 16 years of age. Class D is the paper this whole handbook is written for. Everything else on the list is a bigger vehicle. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.10: “To obtain an original regular Class D license, you must be at least 16 years of age.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
