Renewal and replacement — Utah Permit Test

Renewal and replacement on the Utah permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

A Utah driver license may be renewed up to six months before it expires.

Six months of warning means nobody has to drive on an expired card while waiting for an appointment.

You may renew your driver license up to six months before the expiration of the license.

Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.18

A replacement Utah driver license expires on the same date as the license it replaces.

Losing a card does not buy more time. The replacement runs out exactly when the lost one would have.

The expiration date of a replacement driver license will be the same date as the license it replaces.

Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.19

A Utah driver replacing a license must pass an eye exam and have a new photograph taken.

Eight years changes a face and can change eyesight. A replacement is a chance to check both.

In addition, an eye exam must be passed and a new photograph taken.

Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.19

A driver whose Utah license has expired may have to complete the written knowledge and driving skills tests again, depending on how long it has been expired.

The longer a license has been dead, the less the state knows about you. At some point it asks again.

You may have to complete the written knowledge and driving skills tests again, depending on the length of expiration.

Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.19

A Utah driver with a valid license who has not received more than six reportable violations in the past eight years is eligible for the good driver program.

A clean record is worth something concrete here: a renewal that arrives by mail rather than a morning in a line of traffic.

If you have NOT received more than six reportable violations in the past eight years, and your driver license status is currently valid, you are eligible for Utah’s good driver program.

On the test

How early may a Utah driver license be renewed?

Up to six months before expiration. Six months of warning means nobody has to drive on an expired card while waiting for an appointment. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.18: “You may renew your driver license up to six months before the expiration of the license.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
