Submerged vehicle — Utah Permit Test
Submerged vehicle on the Utah permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
A vehicle that enters water will float on the surface for only 30 to 60 seconds, so the driver should immediately attempt to get out.
Under a minute is the whole window. Everything that follows has to happen before the car goes under.
If your vehicle enters water, it will only float on the surface for 30 to 60 seconds so immediately attempt to get out of the vehicle.
The first step for a driver in a vehicle entering water is to remove the safety belt.
Everything else is impossible while you are strapped in, and the belt is harder to find once the water reaches it.
First, remove your safety belt.
After removing the safety belt a driver should lower the window and climb onto the top of the vehicle.
The window is the way out while the car still floats. A door will not open against the water pressure.
Lower the window, and climb onto the vehicle’s top.
A driver in a sinking vehicle should take off heavy clothing but keep their shoes on, in case they have to kick out a window to escape.
A shoe is the only tool you have for breaking a window, and bare feet against glass underwater achieve nothing.
Take off heavy clothing that will cause you to sink, but keep your shoes on in case you have to kick the window to escape.
Where a vehicle sinks quickly and the doors and windows will not open, a driver should wait for the pressure to equalize and use the air pocket near the highest part of the vehicle.
The pressure outside has to match the pressure inside before a door will move, and the air pocket is what buys that time.
If you cannot open the door or window, there will be a small air pocket near the part of the vehicle that is highest in the water.
On the test
How long does a vehicle float after entering water?
30 to 60 seconds. Under a minute is the whole window. Everything that follows has to happen before the car goes under. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.62: “If your vehicle enters water, it will only float on the surface for 30 to 60 seconds so immediately attempt to get out of the vehicle.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
