Regulatory signs — Utah Permit Test

Regulatory signs on the Utah permit test — 10 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

This sign means stop, and a driver must come to a complete stop at it.

It is the one sign with no judgment in it at all. The wheels stop turning, and then you look.

All stop signs.

Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.35

This sign means a driver must slow down and yield to traffic that has the right-of-way.

Yielding is not stopping, but it becomes stopping the moment anything is coming. The judgment is yours.

A yield sign means you must slow down and yield to traffic that has the right-of-way.

Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.48

This sign means a driver may not enter the roadway ahead.

It is posted where traffic is coming straight at you, usually on an exit ramp or a one-way street.

Do Not Enter

Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.47

This sign means a driver may not make a right turn here.

The turn it forbids is usually into a one-way street or across a crossing the corner cannot see.

No Right Turn

Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.47

This sign means a driver may not make a left turn here.

A left turn crosses oncoming traffic, so it is the first movement taken away where a corner is busy.

No Left Turn

Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.47

This sign means a driver may not turn around to go back the way they came.

Turning across every lane takes several seconds, and this sign marks the places where nobody has them.

No U-Turn

Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.47

This sign shows the posted speed limit for the road a driver is on.

It is the number every other speed rule is measured from, and it changes more often than most drivers notice.

These signs tell you about traffic directions, lane use, turning, speed, parking, and other special situations.

Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.47

This sign means traffic moves only in the direction of the arrow, and a driver may not turn in the opposite direction.

A street that only runs one way has nobody watching for a car coming the other way. There is no version of that which works.

Traffic moves only in the direction of the arrow. Do not turn in the opposite direction of the arrow.

Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.49

This sign tells a driver they are traveling against traffic and must not continue.

It faces the wrong direction on purpose. Seeing it at all means you are already where nobody expects you.

Never drive the wrong way on a one-way street.

Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.49

This sign cancels the usual permission to turn right after stopping at a stop signal.

Utah lets you turn right after stopping almost everywhere, so the exception has to be posted to be known.

You may turn right on a red light after coming to a complete stop unless posted otherwise.

On the test

What does this sign require of a driver?

A complete stop. It is the one sign with no judgment in it at all. The wheels stop turning, and then you look. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.35: “All stop signs.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
