Desert driving — Utah Permit Test
Desert driving on the Utah permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
A driver crossing the Utah desert should always carry enough water for themselves and their passengers to survive a breakdown.
Out there the car is the shade and the water is the whole plan. There may be nothing else for fifty miles.
Always carry enough water for you and your passengers to survive in the desert if your vehicle breaks down.
A driver whose vehicle breaks down in the desert should stay with it, unless help is at a visible call box or an inhabited building within a few minutes’ walk.
A car is visible from the air and from the road. A person walking in the heat is neither, and does not get far.
If your vehicle breaks down in the desert, stay with it.
A driver should not take side roads off a Utah freeway or highway unless they know where they go.
A desert track can run forty miles to nothing. There is no signage, no fuel, and often no way to turn round.
Do not take side roads off the freeway or highway unless you know where they go.
A driver should carry water for the vehicle’s radiator and watch the radiator temperature and coolant levels in the desert.
Heat kills the cooling system first. A gallon of water in the trunk is the difference between a stop and a tow.
Carry water for your vehicle’s radiator. The vehicle’s cooling system can be affected, so watch the radiator temperature and coolant levels.
A driver unused to high temperatures should not cross the Utah desert in summer, and if they must should stay on the freeways in a vehicle with air conditioning.
The heat out there is a hazard in its own right, and the freeway is where somebody will find you.
If you must drive through the desert in the summer, stay on the freeways and use a vehicle with air conditioning.
On the test
What should a Utah desert driver always carry?
Enough water to survive on. Out there the car is the shade and the water is the whole plan. There may be nothing else for fifty miles. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.57: “Always carry enough water for you and your passengers to survive in the desert if your vehicle breaks down.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
