Yielding right of way — Utah Permit Test
Yielding right of way on the Utah permit test — 7 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
At a four-way stop a driver yields to the driver on their right when both arrive at the same time.
Somebody has to go first, and a rule everybody knows beats four drivers waving at each other.
The driver on your right at a four-way stop if both of you arrive at the same time.
A driver yields to a driver who was at the intersection before them.
First to arrive goes first. It is the rule that settles most intersections before any other rule is needed.
A driver who is at the intersection before you.
A driver making a left turn yields to drivers in the opposite lane.
A left turn crosses the path of everybody coming the other way. They keep going and you wait.
Drivers in the opposite lane when you are making a left turn.
A driver coming from a driveway or a private road yields to drivers on the public road.
Traffic on the road has no reason to expect a car appearing from a driveway. Joining is your responsibility, not theirs.
Drivers on a public road if you are coming from a driveway or a private road.
A driver on a freeway entrance ramp yields to drivers already on the interstate highway.
The traffic on the freeway cannot slow or swerve safely at that speed. Fitting in is the job of the car arriving.
Drivers already on an interstate highway if you are on the entrance ramp.
A Utah driver should never think they have the right of way, and should always look at the situation and think about safety.
Right of way is something other drivers give you, not something you take. Assuming it is how intersections go wrong.
Never think that you have the right of way. Always look at the situation and think about safety.
A driver yields to pedestrians, bicyclists, and others who are still in the intersection.
Anybody on foot or on two wheels inside the intersection has the least protection and the least speed to get clear.
Pedestrians, bicyclists, and others that are still in the intersection.
On the test
Who goes first when two Utah drivers reach a four-way stop together?
The driver on the right. Somebody has to go first, and a rule everybody knows beats four drivers waving at each other. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.50: “The driver on your right at a four-way stop if both of you arrive at the same time.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
