Proper lane usage — Utah Permit Test
Proper lane usage on the Utah permit test — 6 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
A driver turning onto a road with multiple lanes must finish the turn in the lane that corresponds to the one they started from.
Swinging across two lanes puts you where another driver is already going. Finish in your own lane and change later.
When turning onto a road with multiple lanes, you must finish your turn in the lane that corresponds to the one you started from.
On multi-lane roads a driver should move to or remain in the far-right lane unless passing another vehicle or the lane is blocked.
Keeping right leaves the other lanes free for traffic moving faster, which is what stops a line of traffic forming behind you.
On multi-lane roads, always move to or remain in the far-right lane unless you are passing another vehicle or the lane is blocked.
A driver may never change lanes while driving through an intersection, and must wait until clear of it before moving to a different lane.
An intersection already has cars arriving from three directions. A lane change there is one more thing nobody expects.
Never attempt to change lanes while driving through an intersection. Wait until you have completely cleared the intersection before moving to a different lane.
A driver should maintain lane integrity by staying within designated lanes and not driving over curbs or sidewalks.
The lane lines are a promise to every other driver about where your car will be. Keeping it is most of driving.
Maintain lane integrity: Stay within designated lanes, do not driver over curbs or sidewalks.
A driver may not straddle or drive over a painted lane marking unless doing so to make a legal and safe maneuver.
Straddling a line puts half your car in somebody else’s lane and leaves them nowhere to go.
Do not straddle or drive over painted lane marking unless it is to make a legal and safe maneuver.
From a single left turn lane a driver finishes the turn in the far-left lane, the lane closest to the curb.
One turning lane feeds one receiving lane. Ending up anywhere else crosses a path somebody else is using.
Single left turn lanes: Finish your turn in the far-left lane (the lane closest to the curb.)
On the test
Which lane must a Utah driver finish a turn in?
The one matching the lane they started from. Swinging across two lanes puts you where another driver is already going. Finish in your own lane and change later. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.31: “When turning onto a road with multiple lanes, you must finish your turn in the lane that corresponds to the one you started from.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
