No passing situations — Utah Permit Test
No passing situations on the Utah permit test — 6 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
A driver may never pass when a curve or a hill blocks their view.
The road you cannot see is the road an oncoming car is already using. There is no way to make that pass safe.
If a curve or hill blocks your view.
A driver may never pass at an intersection, or pass another car stopped at a crosswalk.
A car stopped at a crosswalk is stopped for somebody you cannot see. Going around it is driving at them blind.
At intersections, or another car when stopped at a crosswalk.
A driver may never pass before a railroad crossing or a bridge.
Neither one gives you anywhere to go if the pass goes wrong, and a bridge has no shoulder at all.
Before a railroad crossing or bridge.
A driver may not pass a snowplow displaying flashing yellow lights on the side where a plow blade is deployed.
The blade throws snow and rock sideways and sits wider than the truck. Nobody can see you coming up beside it.
If a snowplow displays flashing yellow lights, an individual operating a vehicle near the snowplow may not pass or overtake a snowplow on the side of the snowplow where a plow blade is deployed.
Where three or more snowplows operate in echelon formation, a driver may not pass them on either side.
Plows in echelon clear the whole road at once. There is no gap between them to pass through, only snow.
If three or more snowplows operate in echelon formation, an individual operating a vehicle may not pass or overtake the snowplows on either side.
A driver may never pass in a no-passing zone or when there is an oncoming vehicle.
The zone is marked because somebody measured the sight line. An oncoming car settles it without any paint.
In a no-passing zone.
On the test
When may a Utah driver not pass because of the road shape?
When a curve or hill blocks the view. The road you cannot see is the road an oncoming car is already using. There is no way to make that pass safe. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.34: “If a curve or hill blocks your view.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
