Crash scene duties — Utah Permit Test

Crash scene duties on the Utah permit test — 10 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

A driver involved in a crash in Utah must stop immediately.

Leaving turns a crash into a crime. Everything else that follows depends on having stopped first.

If you are involved in a crash—stop immediately.

Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.65

A Utah driver who does not remain at the scene of a crash may have their license suspended or revoked for up to one year, and may face a jail sentence of up to one year, a fine of up to $2500, or both.

Driving away costs more than almost any crash does. The penalty is for leaving, not for the collision.

Your driver license may be suspended or revoked for up to one year. In addition, you may receive a jail sentence of up to one year, a fine of up to $2500, or both.

Failing to stop at the scene of an injury crash is a third-degree felony in Utah.

Where somebody is hurt, leaving stops being a traffic offense and becomes a felony on your record for life.

It is a third-degree felony for a person to fail to stop at the scene of an injury crash.

Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.65

A Utah driver must notify law enforcement immediately if a crash results in injuries, death, or at least $2500 in total property damage.

Below that figure it is between the drivers and their insurers. Above it the state wants a record of what happened.

If the crash results in injuries, death, or at least $2500 in total property damage, you must notify law enforcement (911) immediately.

Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.65

A Utah driver must render reasonable assistance to anyone injured in a crash, including arranging transport for medical treatment where it is plainly needed or requested.

Reasonable assistance is a duty, not a kindness. Standing back and waiting is not enough when somebody is hurt.

You are required to render reasonable assistance to any person injured in the crash, including transporting or making arrangements for transporting the injured person to a physician or hospital for medical treatment if it is apparent that treatment is necessary or the injured person requests transportation.

Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.65

A driver should avoid moving anyone who appears seriously injured unless it is necessary to prevent further injury.

Moving somebody with a spine injury can do more damage than the crash did. Leaving them still is usually the help.

Avoid moving anyone who appears to be seriously injured unless such action is necessary to prevent further injury.

Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.65

Drivers involved in a Utah crash must exchange their name and address, the vehicle registration number, and their insurance information including the agent or provider’s name and phone number.

Three pieces of information settle almost every claim, and none of them can be collected afterwards.

Your name and address.

Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.65

Where the owner of an unattended vehicle cannot be found, a Utah driver must leave a note with their name and address and the plate number of the vehicle that caused the crash.

Hitting a parked car and driving off is leaving the scene. The note is what turns it into an accident instead.

Name and address of the driver of your vehicle.

Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.65

A Utah driver who gives the required information to a police officer at the scene is exempt from giving it to the other people involved.

Once an officer has it the record exists. Nobody has to hand their details to a stranger who is still angry.

The operator of a vehicle that provides the information required to a police officer at the scene of the crash is exempt from providing the information to other persons involved.

Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.65

Where a Utah crash results in property damage only, the driver may move the vehicle out of the travel lanes to the nearest safe location and must remain at the scene until all other requirements are fulfilled.

A damaged car sitting in a live lane is the second crash waiting to happen. Moving it is allowed; leaving is not.

may move the vehicle as soon as possible out of the travel lanes on any roadway to an adjacent shoulder, the nearest suitable cross street, or other suitable location that does not obstruct traffic

On the test

What must a Utah driver do when involved in a crash?

Stop immediately. Leaving turns a crash into a crime. Everything else that follows depends on having stopped first. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.65: “If you are involved in a crash—stop immediately.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
