Point system — Utah Permit Test

Point system on the Utah permit test — 9 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

A Utah driver over 21 who acquires 200 or more points within a three year period is asked to appear for a hearing.

Two hundred points is roughly four serious violations. The hearing is where somebody decides whether you keep driving.

OVER 21 YEARS OF AGE-if you acquire 200 or more points within a three year period, you will be asked to appear for a hearing.

Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.72

A Utah driver under 21 who acquires 70 points or more within a three year period is asked to appear for a hearing.

Seventy points is barely two violations. The margin for a young driver is far smaller and it is meant to be.

UNDER 21 YEARS OF AGE-if you acquire 70 points or more within a three year period, you will be asked to appear for a hearing.

Half the total points on a Utah record are removed when a driver goes one full year without being convicted of a moving traffic violation.

A clean year halves the score. It is the cheapest way back from a bad one.

The point system provides that half of the total points on your record will be removed when you drive one full year without being convicted of a moving traffic violation.

Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.73

All points are removed from a Utah record after two successive years without a conviction.

Two clean years wipes the score entirely, which is the state saying the pattern has actually changed.

If you drive two successive years without a conviction, all points will be removed from your record.

Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.73

Points for individual Utah convictions are automatically removed three years after the date of the violation.

Every point has its own three-year clock, so an old violation stops counting even without a clean run.

Points for individual convictions are automatically removed from your record three years after the date of the violation.

Completing a defensive driving course recommended by the division removes 50 points from a Utah record, and the reduction is permitted only once in any three year period.

Fifty points is one serious violation bought back, and you get to do it once every three years.

As a further incentive, 50 points may be removed from your record upon completing a defensive driving course recommended by the division.

Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.73

The defensive driving course that reduces Utah points is different from the traffic school offered by some courts.

Sitting the wrong course is a wasted evening. Only the division’s recommended one moves the point total.

The defensive driving course required to reduce 50 points from your driving record is different than the traffic school offered by some courts.

Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.73

After a Utah point hearing a driver may be placed on probation, asked to take the defensive driving course, or have their driving privilege denied or suspended for one month to one year.

The hearing has several outcomes and most of them are not a suspension, which is the reason to attend it.

The denial/suspension may be for one month to one year, depending on your driving record.

The Utah point system is part of the state’s Driver Improvement Program, and points are assigned for specific types of violations.

The program is meant to change how somebody drives rather than simply punish them, which is why points can be cleared.

On the test

How many points in three years bring a Utah driver over 21 to a hearing?

200 or more. Two hundred points is roughly four serious violations. The hearing is where somebody decides whether you keep driving. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.72: “OVER 21 YEARS OF AGE-if you acquire 200 or more points within a three year period, you will be asked to appear for a hearing.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
