Speed limits — Utah Permit Test

Speed limits on the Utah permit test — 7 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

Utah’s basic speed law says a driver may never drive faster than is reasonable and prudent under the existing conditions.

The posted number assumes a dry road in daylight. On ice at night the legal speed can still be far too fast.

In Utah, the basic speed law states that you may never drive faster than is reasonable and prudent under the existing conditions.

Where no sign is posted and no special hazard exists, the Utah speed limit passing a school building or grounds during recess is 20 miles per hour.

Twenty is roughly the speed at which a child struck by a car usually lives. That is the whole reason for the number.

20 miles per hour: • When passing a school building or grounds during school recess.

The Utah speed limit in any business or residential area is 25 miles per hour where no sign is posted.

These are the streets with driveways, parked cars and children. Twenty-five is what leaves room to stop for any of them.

25 miles per hour: • In any business or residential area.

The Utah speed limit on major highways is 55 miles per hour, as posted.

A major highway is not a freeway. The traffic on it crosses and turns, which is why the number is lower.

55 miles per hour: • On major highways, as posted.

Utah rural interstate highways carry speed limits of 65, 70, 75, or 80 miles per hour.

Utah posts some of the highest limits in the country out here, and the transition down to them is marked rather than guessed.

65/70/75/80 miles per hour: • On rural interstate highways.

Utah speed transition zones are indicated with pavement markings and additional signs.

The limit does not drop in one step out here. The markings are the warning that it is about to.

A Utah driver also has a limit at the low end, and a peace officer may issue a citation for impeding the normal flow of traffic.

A car well below the traffic speed makes everybody else overtake, and overtaking is where the crashes happen.

Peace officers are allowed to issue you a citation if you are impeding the normal flow of traffic.

On the test

What does Utah’s basic speed law require?

A speed that is reasonable and prudent. The posted number assumes a dry road in daylight. On ice at night the legal speed can still be far too fast. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.44: “In Utah, the basic speed law states that you may never drive faster than is reasonable and prudent under the existing conditions.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
