Youthful driver restrictions — Utah Permit Test

Youthful driver restrictions on the Utah permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

A licensed 16 year old in Utah may not drive between 12 am and 5 am.

Those five hours are the worst of the week for a new driver. Empty roads, tired eyes, and drivers who have been drinking.

If you have a driver license (not permit) 12 am - 5 am

Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.8

A licensed 16 year old may drive during the nighttime restriction when accompanied by a licensed driver aged 21 in the front seat, on agricultural assignment, driving to and from work, driving to and from a school sponsored activity, or in an emergency.

The curfew is about risk, not punishment. A shift that ends at one in the morning is not the risk it was written for.

Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.8

A licensed Utah driver aged 16 may carry only immediate family members in the vehicle until six months from the license issue date.

A car full of friends is the loudest thing a new driver has ever had to ignore. Six months of practice comes first.

If you have a driver license (not permit) immediate family members only in vehicle until six months from issue date

Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.8

A 16 year old with a learner permit must have a licensed parent, stepparent, foster parent, legal guardian, approved driving instructor, or responsible adult 21 or over in the front seat.

The front seat is the only place a supervisor can reach the wheel or see what you see. Utah names who may sit there.

Front seat passenger must be a licensed parent, stepparent, foster parent, legal guardian, approved driving instructor, or responsible adult 21 or over

Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.8

A Utah learner permit holder aged 18 or older must have a licensed driver 21 years of age in the front seat.

At 16 the seat beside you is reserved for a parent, a guardian or an instructor. At 18 it is a licensed adult of 21, which is the first of the graduated rules to come off.

On the test

Between which hours may a licensed 16 year old not drive in Utah?

12 am and 5 am. Those five hours are the worst of the week for a new driver. Empty roads, tired eyes, and drivers who have been drinking. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.8: “If you have a driver license (not permit) 12 am - 5 am”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
