Lane filtering — Utah Permit Test

Lane filtering on the Utah permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

Lane splitting, riding between cars moving at higher speeds, is illegal in Utah and is considered dangerous.

Splitting past moving traffic gives a rider no escape if anybody changes lanes. Utah bans it outright.

Lane filtering is legal in Utah only where the roadway has a speed limit of 45 miles per hour or less, or on an off-ramp, and is not permitted on an on-ramp.

Filtering is allowed only where the surrounding traffic is slow enough for a mistake to be survivable.

The individual is on a roadway with a speed limit of 45 miles per hour or less or an off-ramp. Lane filtering is not permitted on an on-ramp.

A Utah motorcycle lane filtering may travel at no more than 15 miles per hour, and the vehicle being overtaken in the same lane must be stopped.

Fifteen past a stopped car is slow enough to stop if a door opens. Neither condition is optional.

The motorcycle is traveling at a speed of 15 miles per hour or less.

Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.82

A Utah motorcycle, moped, or bicycle operator aged 16 or older may proceed through an intersection after a complete stop and waiting at least 90 seconds where the signal fails to detect them and nothing is approaching.

A signal loop often cannot see a motorcycle at all. Without this rule a rider would sit there until a car arrived.

An operator of a motorcycle, moped, or bicycle who is 16 years of age or older may proceed through an intersection after coming to a complete stop at a stop line or intersection and waiting at least 90 seconds, if the traffic-control signal fails to detect their presence and no vehicles or pedestrians are approaching or present in the intersection.

Utah lane filtering requires a roadway or off-ramp divided into two or more adjacent lanes in the same direction of travel, and the movement must be made safely.

Filtering needs a lane to move into. On a single lane there is nowhere for the manoeuvre to end.

The individual is on a roadway, or an off-ramp, divided into two or more adjacent traffic lanes in the same direction of travel.

On the test

What is the status of lane splitting in Utah?

It is illegal. Splitting past moving traffic gives a rider no escape if anybody changes lanes. Utah bans it outright. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.82: “Lane splitting is riding between cars moving at higher speeds and is illegal in Utah and considered dangerous.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
