Pavement markings — Utah Permit Test

Pavement markings on the Utah permit test — 6 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

Yellow lane markings separate traffic moving in two directions on a Utah roadway.

Yellow means somebody is coming the other way. That one color is the difference between a pass and a head-on crash.

YELLOW LANE MARKINGS Two direction roadway

Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.43

White lane markings separate lanes of traffic moving in one direction on a Utah roadway.

White means everybody beside you is going the same way, which is why passing across white is ordinary and across yellow is not.

WHITE LANE MARKINGS One direction roadway passing permitted

Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.43

On a two-direction roadway passing is permitted when the dashed line is on the driver’s side.

The dashes are on the side of the road that can see far enough to pass. A solid line on your side means you cannot.

Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.43

A solid yellow line on a two-direction Utah roadway means passing is prohibited in both directions.

An unbroken line is the road saying nobody can see far enough here, in either direction, for anybody to pass.

Two direction roadway, passing prohibited in both directions

Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.43

A double white line on a one-direction Utah roadway separates an express or carpool lane from the general lanes, and crossing it is prohibited.

It is the one white line you may not cross. It marks a boundary between traffic moving at very different speeds.

One direction roadway, separating express lane or carpool lane from general lanes - crossing prohibited

Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.43

Marks painted on a Utah road give directions or warnings, divide lanes, show where passing and lane changes are allowed, and mark turn lanes and crosswalks.

The paint is a set of instructions most drivers never read deliberately. It is doing as much work as the signs.

Marks painted on the road give you directions or warnings. They divide lanes and show where you may pass other vehicles or change lanes.

On the test

What do yellow lane markings on a Utah road separate?

Traffic moving in two directions. Yellow means somebody is coming the other way. That one color is the difference between a pass and a head-on crash. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.43: “YELLOW LANE MARKINGS Two direction roadway”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
