Insurance coverage — Utah Permit Test
Insurance coverage on the Utah permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
Bodily injury and property damage liability is mandatory Utah coverage that pays for injuries or damage your negligence causes to another person or their property.
This is the cover the law is actually about. It pays the person you hit, not you.
BODILY INJURY AND PROPERTY DAMAGE LIABILITY—mandatory coverage that provides payment for injuries or damages caused by your negligence to another person or property.
Uninsured motorist coverage pays for injuries to a Utah driver and their passengers in a crash caused by an uninsured or hit-and-run driver.
The other driver having no insurance does not pay your hospital bill. This is the cover that does.
UNINSURED MOTORIST—covers injuries to you and your passengers if you are in a crash that is caused by another driver who does not have insurance or by a “hit-and-run” driver.
Personal injury protection, also called no-fault, is mandatory Utah coverage that provides basic benefits for bodily injury without having to determine fault.
It pays first and argues later, which is what gets somebody treated in the week after a crash rather than the year after.
PERSONAL INJURY PROTECTION (ALSO KNOWN AS “NO-FAULT” OR “PIP”)—mandatory and provides some basic benefits and coverage for bodily injury to you and others without having to determine “fault” in a crash.
Collision coverage pays to repair a Utah driver’s own vehicle after a collision, subject to a deductible, and is not required by law.
The state does not care whether your own car is repaired. Your lender usually does.
COLLISION—covers repairs to your vehicle for damage caused by a collision, subject to a deductible, usually when no other person is at fault.
Comprehensive coverage pays to repair a Utah vehicle for damage caused by something other than a collision, such as fire, theft, vandalism, or glass breakage.
Most damage to a parked car is not a crash at all, and this is the only cover that reaches it.
COMPREHENSIVE—covers repairs to your vehicle for damage caused by reasons other than collisions, such as fire, theft, vandalism, or glass breakage.
On the test
Who does Utah liability coverage pay?
The other person harmed. This is the cover the law is actually about. It pays the person you hit, not you. Utah Driver Handbook 2026-2027, p.69: “BODILY INJURY AND PROPERTY DAMAGE LIABILITY—mandatory coverage that provides payment for injuries or damages caused by your negligence to another person or property.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
