Real id and privilege card — Vermont Permit Test

Real id and privilege card on the Vermont permit test — 3 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

An Enhanced Driver's License needs proof of US citizenship on top of proof of identity, a Social Security number and Vermont residency.

The enhanced card gets you back across a land border, so it has to prove the thing a border asks about.

An EDL requires proof of US Citizenship in addition to proof of Identity, SSN and Vermont Residency.

2025 Vermont Driver's Manual, p.9

A Driver Privilege Card is a Vermont license or permit that is not Real ID compliant. Any Vermont resident may hold one, and it needs no proof of legal presence or citizenship.

Driving and immigration status are different questions. The card answers the first one only.

The Driver Privilege Card is available to anyone that is a Vermont Resident. Issuance of the DPC does not require proof of legal presence or US citizenship.

2025 Vermont Driver's Manual, p.11

Height, weight, eye color and gender are self-designated on a Vermont license or non-driver ID. No document has to back them up.

Nothing on the road turns on them, so asking for paperwork would cost the applicant a trip for nothing.

Applicants are not required under Vermont or federal law to present documentation that confirms the information they submit for these entries.

On the test

What does an Enhanced Driver's License require that an ordinary license does not?

Proof of US citizenship. The enhanced card gets you back across a land border, so it has to prove the thing a border asks about. 2025 Vermont Driver's Manual, p.9: “An EDL requires proof of US Citizenship in addition to proof of Identity, SSN and Vermont Residency.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
